On the 15th of February 2024, the EU-Funded Project “Mapping Inequalities Through the Life Course” (Mapineq) led by Professor Jani Erola hosted its first Scientific Online Seminar.

On 20 April 2023, the project “Regional population diversity and social cohesion in the local context” brought prominent experts from science, policy and civil society together to discuss social cohesion and inclusion in the local context: How can we support depopulating and rural communities with better inclusion and integration policies? What are the capacities at the local level to welcome newcomers? How can we achieve structures and instruments of sustainable inclusion at the local level? Participants from various European regions exchanged their views and experiences on the needs and capacities of local communities in designing and implementing inclusion policies.

On 21 March 2023, the project “Regional population diversity and social cohesion in the local context” invited eminent experts from science, policy and civil society to discuss the role of local administrations in adapting to changes in their population. How can local administrations be better prepared for shrinking and ageing populations? What capacities do they have to plan for the future and the growing demographic diversity? How can we support local decision-making with more access to data and scientific knowledge?

On 24 January 2023, the project “Regional population diversity and social cohesion in the local context” invited eminent experts from science, policy and civil society to discuss place-based solutions and digital tools to provide services and maintain infrastructure in depopulating regions. In two thematic panels, the workshop participants from various European regions exchanged their views and experiences on how to improve the quality of life in shrinking regions and attract newcomers.

On 29 November 2022, the project “Regional population diversity and social cohesion in the local context” invited eminent experts from science, policy and civil society to discuss social cohesion and sense of belonging as meaningful achievements to counter demographic challenges of depopulation and ageing and prevent their negative social effects. The workshop participants exchanged their views and experiences on local cultural initiatives and regions in transition in two thematic panels on "local belonging and ties" and "regions in transition".

On Tuesday, 18 October 2022, the project “Regional population diversity and social cohesion in the local context” organised its first online workshop to discuss local mechanisms of social integration, engagement and agency as meaningful tools to counter demographic challenges of depopulation and aging and prevent their negative social effects. Five pivot outcomes came from the engaging conversations in three panels and the plenary discussion session, that shed light on the efforts and needs of different generations in rural and depopulating areas. 

During the 20th edition of the European Week of Regions and Cities (#EURegionsWeek), Population Europe and OECD brought together policy-makers and experts to discuss policies on adapting to shrinking populations in regions and countries experiencing sustained and strong population losses. 

On Tuesday, 5 April 2022, Population Europe hosted an online high-level expert meeting to review current demographic challenges and opportunities in Europe and the most important agenda topics aimed at creating more resilient, connected, diverse and prosperous European regions.
