Books and Reports: OECD Policy Brief: The Future of Social Protection: What works for non-standard workers?
POLICY BRIEF ON THE FUTURE OF WORK Rapid and deep technological changes driven by the digital revolution, together with globalisation and demographic changes, are creating many new job opportunities but also new challenges. In particular, these transformations are contributing to the rise in non-standard forms of employment – selfemployment, temporary work, and ‘independent contracting’.

Event: The Future of Demography: How to Promote an “Interdiscipline”
Fri Jun 8
Demography is a discipline which is somehow fixed in a Procrustean bed: At many universities, it is subsumed into other academic subjects (such as sociology, economics, geography), thus often exposed to risks of budget cuts and staff shortages; while on the other side, the often small group of demographers in a department is stretched to cover a broad range of population developments. How can demography as an “interdiscipline” be better promoted? Should we put stronger emphasis on building our own corpus of population theory, as suggested by leading researchers?

Did Career-related Disadvantages of Italian and Spanish Immigrants in Switzerland Balance Out in the Course of Recent Immigration?
Foreign workers are usually found on either the bottom or top end of the Swiss labour market, while Swiss natives hold the intermediate level positions. At the same time, the distribution of the foreign work force seems to be influenced by the origin of the workers.

Foreign workers are usually found on either the bottom or top end of the Swiss labour market, while Swiss natives hold the intermediate level positions. At the same time, the distribution of the foreign work force seems to be influenced by the origin of the workers. By means of the 1980 Census and the 2010-2011 Structural Survey, Elena Vidal-Coso and Enrique Ortega-Rivera compare the career-related disadvantages of Italian and Spanish immigrants between 1976 and 1980, and 2006 and 2011. Read more.

Books and Reports: Delaying Retirement: Progress and Challenges of Active Ageing in Europe, the United States and Japan
To a backdrop of ageing societies, pension crises and labour market reforms, this book investigates how the policy shift from early retirement to active ageing has affected individual retirement behaviour. Focusing on eleven European countries, the United States and Japan, it brings together leading international experts to analyze recent changes in pension systems. Their findings demonstrate that there has been a fundamental transition in pension policies and a steep increase in older workers’ retirement ages and employment rates.
