What do we know about chances of social mobility in Europe? To what extent can educational and labour market policies contribute to more equal societies? These were some of the questions driving presentations during a meeting organized by Population Europe, the European Consortium for Sociological Research, and the European Parliament Research Service on the 11th of November 2019.

Ten years of improvements in health and health behaviour in the Spanish cohorts born between 1945 and 1969

In this issue of Perspectives Demogràfiques, health trends research is extended by analysing Spanish cohorts born between 1945 and 1969. The results show that despite the cohorts experiencing an economic crisis and becoming 10 years older, self-perceived health remained relatively similar with a tendency to improve between the years 2006-07 and 2014-17. Nevertheless, important differences according to educational level, employment status and sex persist. 

In this issue of Perspectives Demogràfiques, health trends research is extended by analysing Spanish cohorts born between 1945 and 1969. Neighbourhood Conditions and Old-Age Depression

What role do childhood experiences play in how individuals react to their environment?
Gergő Baranyi and colleagues used data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) to assess longitudinal associations of neighbourhood nuisances and access to services with depression among older European adults. They found that those exposed to neighbourhood nuisances, i.e., higher poverty, more neighbourhood problems (e.g., crime, noise, littering) or higher air pollution, had a 36 per cent increased chance of developing depression.

Demographic change is one of the major challenges European societies will face in upcoming decades. In order to support outstanding research on the causes and consequences of population developments, Population Europe, the network of Europe’s foremost demographic research institutes, in collaboration with the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft and the Berlin Demography Forum, invites nominations for the European Demographer Award. 

Nominations for the European Demographer Award are due by 12 January 2020. Population Europe, in collaboration with the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft and the Berlin Demography Forum, will present this prize to two researchers at the forefront of population studies on demographic change in Europe.
