The Joint Research Centre (European Commission) is recruiting a Policy Officer to work on demographic topics. The current vacancy is in the Directorate Societal Resilience and Security, Unit Demography and Migration. The Directorate works on science for policy challenges in the areas of space, security and migration and, thus, contributes to the political priorities of the Commission to improve societal resilience and security in a changing geopolitical context.
Areas of work in the Directorate include crisis management and anticipating future risks; strategic infrastructures; enhancing sovereignty in emerging and critical technologies for space and security; safety and sustainability of the built environment, and trends in migration and population dynamics in a socio-economic framework.
The Unit is tasked to support the priorities on Demography across the Commission. In order to fulfil this task, we need to provide research in a wide range of policy domains such as labour markets, health and long-term care, territorial cohesion, global aspects. This research needs to contribute to science-policy dialogues through the Atlas of Demography. The research activities combine demographic projections produced in-house or by external institutions with socio-economic analyses and models.
The jobholder main tasks will be:
- Contribute to research projects in one or more of the following areas: fertility, ageing, migration in population dynamics, impacts of demographic change on competitiveness, labour markets, territorial cohesion, health, and long-term care, intergenerational fairness or global issues.
- Staying up-to-date with the latest scientific developments in demography and being open to exploring new areas and scientific disciplines.
- Collaborating with academic institutions, Eurostat, and other statistical offices, international organizations, and data producers.
- Maintaining close relationships with EU, national, and regional policymakers and stakeholders.
- Presenting research results at scientific and policy seminars and conferences.
- Drafting discussion papers, science-for-policy reports, briefings, and policy implications.
Qualifications (essential):
- A Ph.D. (doctoral degree) or 5 years working experience in demography, economics, or regional development studies.
- Excellent written and spoken English (C1 level).
- Experience with major EU-level surveys (LFS, EUSILC, HBS, SHARE, GGS) and international sources of statistics on demography (EUROSTAT, UNDESA, IIASA, IHME).
- Hands-on experience with data analytics and scientific programming tools (Python, R, STATA).
- Previous demonstrated experience working with policymakers will be a strong asset.
- Flexibility, openness, and a collaborative attitude are required.
- Ability to work both autonomously and in a team, with a results-oriented and resilient approach to working under pressure.
