Open Call: Editor-In-Chief for the European Journal of Population (Deadline: 21 March 2020)

The Council of the European Association for Population Studies (EAPS), in collaboration with Springer Nature, is inviting applications for an Editor-in-Chief for its flagship European Journal of Population (EJP) – www.springer.com/10680.


EJP is a leading interdisciplinary and international peer-reviewed journal devoted to the broad field of population studies. The journal is published under the auspices of EAPS by Springer Nature. EJP publishes high-quality original research that is relevant to an international audience working in the field of population studies. EJP draws contributions and has readers from many disciplines including demography, sociology, anthropology, economics, geography, history, political science, and public health. Contributors come from around the world, and the coverage includes both European and non-European countries.


Established in 1985 the journal has acquired a strong position in European population studies. Now in its 36th volume and with 5 issues a year, EJP is recognized internationally as a leading academic peer reviewed international journal in population studies. It has a solid high Impact Factor and has over the years been ranked among the top in the field.

Due to the end of term of the current editor, we are seeking an Editor-in-Chief who can take on the responsibility for the European Journal of Population for an initial term of four years, ensuring the journal continues to shape, reflect and develop the vibrant research field.


Working with a team of Associate Editors and an international Editorial Board, the Editor-in-Chief’s responsibilities include:


  • Shaping the strategic direction of the journal and defining the editorial policy
  • Overseeing and guiding a rigorous and supportive peer review process
  • Recruiting Associate Editors and leading a successful editorial board
  • Supporting Associate Editors with complex decisions where necessary
  • Working with Springer Nature to ensure the full publication process is running smoothly and on time
  • Take initiative in and develop a vision on acquisition of quality submissions
  • Stay in close touch with and report on journal developments to the European Association for Population Studies and Springer Nature.

We are looking for an established academic with an excellent publication track record in population studies and a broad understanding of the key and emerging themes in the field. A broad international network and open mind towards the broad field is an asset. Having editorial experience will be an advantage.


The position will start officially on 1st January 2021 with a transition period and handover beginning in the summer of 2020.
