By decree of the President of the Republic dated 18 December 2023, Mr François Clanché was appointed Director of the Institut national d'études démographiques (INED) with effect from 1 January 2024.

François Clanché, 57, is a statistician and Inspector General of INSEE. He has degrees in economics and sociology and is a graduate of the École normale supérieure de Cachan (now the ENS de Paris-Saclay) and the École nationale de la statistique et de l'administration économique (ENSAE). He spent part of his career at the Institut national de la Statistique et des études économiques (INSEE), where he was regional director for the PACA region and head of the demography department for 5 years.

He has also held positions of responsibility in the research and statistics departments of the Ministries of Housing, the Interior and Health. François Clanché has been with the Directorate for Research, Studies, Evaluation and Statistics (DREES) since 2022, and is currently leading a project to overhaul the process for producing statistics on causes of death. His personal work has focused on demographic and social issues: poor housing, the family, the distribution of the population across the country, insecurity and the causes of mortality.

He will succeed Magda Tomasini, who has headed the institute since 2015, and who has been appointed head of the Department of Evaluation, Forecasting and Performance (DEPP) in July 2023. Aline Désesquelles, INED's Deputy Director of Research, is acting Director of the Institute.
