Professor Christina Victor will shortly be coming to the end of her tenure as Editor-in-Chief of Ageing & Society. Cambridge University Press, in collaboration with an Editorial Board search committee, is now inviting applications for a new Editor-in-Chief.

Ageing & Society is a leading interdisciplinary and international peer-reviewed journal devoted to the understanding of human ageing and the circumstances of older people in their social and cultural contexts. It draws contributions and has readers from many disciplines including gerontology, sociology, demography, psychology, economics, medicine, social policy and the humanities. The journal promotes high-quality original research which is relevant to an international audience to encourage the exchange of ideas across the broad audience of multidisciplinary academics and practitioners working in the field of ageing.
Now in its 40th volume and publishing 12 issues a year, Ageing & Society is recognised internationally as a leading venue for academic exchange in gerontology. It has an Impact Factor of 1.895 and is currently ranked 16th in the Gerontology category of the JCR. The Press is seeking an Editor-in-Chief who can take on responsibility for Ageing & Society for an initial term of five years, ensuring the journal continues to shape, reflect and develop this vibrant research field.
Editor-in-Chief Vacancy
Working with the support of a Managing Editor, and in collaboration with a team of Associate Editors and an international Editorial Board, the Editor-in-Chief’s responsibilities will include:
- Shaping the strategic direction of the journal and defining editorial policy
- Editing and proofing articles accepted for publication in the journal
- Overseeing a rigorous and supportive peer review process for the papers allocated
- Recruiting Associate Editors and leading a successful editorial board
- Supporting Associate Editors with complex decisions and responding to authors
- Working with Cambridge Production to ensure issues are published on time
- Growing quality submissions to the journal through commissioning initiatives
- Reporting on journal developments and progress to the British Society of Gerontology, the journal’s affiliated society.
The Editor-in-Chief will need to attend two editorial team meetings each year and the annual British Society of Gerontology conference. Applications from social gerontologists working in any discipline and region are welcome. We are looking for an established academic with an excellent publication record in gerontology and a broad understanding of the key and emerging themes in the field. Editorial experience, particularly with online submission systems, will be an advantage.
The position will commence officially on 1st January 2021 with training and handover commencing in the summer of 2020.

Applicants can expect administrative support through a Managing Editor and a small honorarium for travel related to the journal. It is not essential, but, where possible, please indicate any institutional backing that may be available to support you in this role.
The appointment will be on the recommendation of the Editorial Board for a contract period of five years by mutual agreement.
