By the end of 2023, around 3.2 million refugees were registered as living in Germany, with more than half coming from Ukraine and Syria. However, the great potential of integrating people with refugee status into the labour market poses significant challenges. Besides often lacking German language skills, social networks, and information, there are institutional barriers which further complicate the situation, such as employment bans, lengthy asylum processes, and restrictions on residency that further complicate the situation. Factors such as the availability of integration and qualification programs, a welcoming culture, and contact with the local population play a crucial role. How can the labour market integration of refugees in Germany be sustainably improved? What lessons can we learn from the experiences of refugees from Ukraine and other countries? In this Tuesday Dialogue, we will discuss successful measures for overcoming obstacles to the long-term integration of refugees into the labour market and society.
