Kostas Rontos of the University of the Aegean is leading a new project entitled, “The perspective of a permanent refugees’ and immigrants’ settlement in Greece: Revealing the demographic and sociο-economic consequences and their importance for the Greek society’s acceptance”. 

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has launched a new Demographic Resilience Programme to strengthen demographic resilience in Europe and Central Asia.

A newly announced three-year European Union Twinning initiative will support the development of research methods expertise at the University of Tallinn, Estonia. The aim is to strengthen research on youth transitions from a life course perspective.

Professor James Vaupel, Interdisciplinary Centre on Population Dynamics at the University of Southern Denmark, has received a research grant to study consequences of COVID-19 related mortality. The project will investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on survival and mortality across different population groups and countries.

Frans Willekens of the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research has received the 2020 Mindel C. Sheps Award from the Population Association of America (PAA).

Helga de Valk has been appointed by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences as director of the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI) with effect from 1 November 2020. De Valk takes over from Leo van Wissen.

Two researchers within our network, Melinda Mills of the University of Oxford and Sergei Scherbov of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), have received European Research Council (ERC) Proof of Concept Grants for their new projects.

Since the pandemic began, many countries have provided daily counts of COVID-19-related deaths. To go further, in accordance with its missions to disseminate demographic knowledge, INED’s scientific community is working to provide free access to data organized by sex, age group, and place of COVID-19-related deaths. For now, these data concern Germany, France, Italy, and Spain, but other countries should be analysed in the coming weeks.
