Contemporary Social Science has released a themed issue on ‘Family change, intergenerational relations and policy implications’, guest edited by Linda Hantrais (LSE Centre for International Studies, London School of Economics), Julia Brannen (UCL Institute of Education) and Fran Bennett (Department of Social Policy and Intervention, University of Oxford).
This issue explores the varied conceptual understandings of family, household and generation. Contributors from different disciplinary perspectives review international socio-demographic data to track trends in family relations, both within families and in wider society. They then review policy responses to these developments. Research in this special issue covers issues of property, finances, care and value systems, in addition to public policies determining the provision of benefits, goods and services supporting family life. Findings have significant implications for policy development and implementation, with governments in different societal contexts choosing varied responses to apparently similar challenges.
