The Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB), together with the Leibniz Institute for Social Sciences GESIS and the University of Cologne, is creating a new research basis for a better understanding of changes in family and demographic development. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) with 12.5 million euros until 2024 and if the evaluation is positive the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community (BMI) will ensure that the funding is continued.
FReDA – The German family demography panel bases on the Generation and Gender Survey (GGS) every three years and adds annual surveys among women and men between the ages of 18 and 49. Further, FReDA will continue the pairfam-sample and will conduct partner-interviews every year. It pursues the goal of significantly improving and ensuring the long-term sustainability of research in Germany on changes in family and population development.

Federal minister of research Anja Karliczek: “The surveys are required to ensure international comparability so that countries can learn from each other. I am already anxious to see the results that the new data infrastructure for family and generation research will deliver.”
Federal Minister of the Interior Horst Seehofer: “If we want to support families in the best possible way with our policies, we have to know their specific needs well. Research in this area is essential for an effective implementation of our demographic strategy.”
