About PopFest 2025

PopFest is an established population studies conference for graduate, postgraduate and PhD students. It brings together researchers from different social science disciplines, such as demography, sociology, social statistics, public health, social policy, international development, human geography, urban and landscape planning, social anthropology, gender studies and other related fields, with a focus on population studies.

PopFest is organised by PhD students, and provides a supportive learning environment for postgraduate students to present and discuss their work with their peers, and to get feedback and ideas from fellow researchers. The conference is a great networking opportunity, giving participants a chance to learn about the breadth of population research being conducted.

PopFest is organised in conjunction with the British Society for Population Studies (BSPS). This year organisation is being shared with the ESRC Centre for Population Change - Connecting Generations.

Call for Abstracts

PopFest 2025 will have the following research strands:

• Ageing Populations and Intergenerational Relations
• Computational Demography and Data Science
• Critical Demography, Life Course Events and Human Capital
• Ethnicity, Migration and Migrant Populations
• Global Health, Mortality and Wellbeing
• Historical Demography
• Spatial Issues, Environment and Sustainability
• Unions, Family and Fertility
• Posters/Flash Session

If you research a theme not listed above but would like to participate in PopFest, please send in an abstract after the call for papers is released and list your theme clearly at the top of the abstract. If successful, we may create a specific session for that theme depending on submission numbers or create a miscellaneous session as previous PopFests have done. Abstracts should be no more than 250 words, and submitted as a PDF on the submission form which will be released on the 13th January on this website.
