The Pitfalls of a European Migration Policy
Key messages: A European migration policy is hampered by structural and institutional limits on cooperation between the Member States and between different policy fields at the European level. The divisive issues of today’s migration debate are fears of alleged “welfare shopping”, mixed flows of migration and the secondary movement of migrants, which are all situated in grey areas between the current institutional baskets.

Why Immigrant Children Don't Do Well At School
Across Europe, statistics show that children from migrant families are less successful in school then other pupils. In a recent article Camilla Borgna and Dalit Contini examine the impact of educational systems and provide explanations beyond language skills and socio-economic background.Using data from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) survey, the authors compare results for 17 countries. They focus on second-generation immigrants and their achievements at the end of compulsory schooling, about age 15.

Books and Reports: Le migrazione al tempo della crisi (Migration in times of crisis)
This volume (in Italian language) is a collection of articles published in Neodemos on migration, edited by Corrado Bonifazi and Massimo Livi Bacci. The first part of the book analyses the international context: migrants’ rights, the right of free movement inside the EU, and changes in migration cycles. The second part explores immigration in Italy: general trends, and the effect of the crisis. The third part of the book deals with integration, citizenship and demographic issues. The final part is about emigration of Italians.

Event: Population Europe Event - The Stranger Among Us. Immigration Policies and Social Cohesion in Europe
Immigration Policies and Social Cohesion in Europe
Current European migration policies are not responding to mid- and long-term demographic developments, but instead are being shaped by short-term political agendas in the member states. This was one of the conclusions from a Population Europe Event about migration and migration policy in Rome, organised in cooperation with Sapienza University of Rome and Neodemos under the patronage of the Senate of the Republic of Italy.

Missing the Bigger Picture
Immigrants and their children and grandchildren form a significant part of the population in many European countries. But only over the last decade has research begun to show increasing interest in understanding the patterns of union formation and childbearing behaviour of ethnic minorities. Further research is needed to gain a better understanding of the connection between family life and integration. Hill Kulu and Amparo González-Ferrer reviewed the existing literature and proposed four areas where to focus.

Missing the Bigger Picture
