Homeownership is less common in Germany than in most other EU countries, and opportunities to become a homeowner are unevenly distributed: People whose parents own a home are much more likely to become homeowners. However, this correlation is weakening across generations: younger age groups are less likely to own a home, and more often than in the past, children from homeowner households end up renting. Nevertheless, compared to the rest of Europe, a person’s background still plays a particularly significant role. How could this be changed, and how could the path to homeownership be made easier for young families?
Tuesday Dialogues: This series of public, online talks on demographic research and pressing societal issues has taken place one Tuesday a month since 2020. Since 2024 they are being organized in collaboration with the Einstein Center Population Diversity in Berlin. The Wissenschaft in Berlin Förderfonds supports this important initiative in a forward-looking field of research.
