European Demographer Awards laureates announced

This year's awards go to Julia Hellstrand, Cosmo Strozza and Éva Beaujouan

Along with the Förderfonds Wissenschaft in Berlin we are proud to announce this year's laureates of the European Demographer Awards.

European Demographer Awards go to Julia Hellstrand (Helsinki), Cosmo Strozza (Odense), and Éva Beaujouan (Vienna). Congratulations!

Since 2015, the European Demographer Awards have honoured outstanding research at the frontier of anthropological, biological, economic, historical, mathematical, political, sociological or statistical population studies, achieved by researchers in the early stage of their careers or those at more advanced stages. The applications are evaluated by a committee composed of eminent demographers from all over Europe.

The awards will be presented at the hybrid evening event of the Berlin Demography Days on Monday, 27 October 2025 from 6 to 8 pm, with Petra Bahr, the German State Secretary at the German Federal Ministry for Education, Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth in attendance.

The prize will be awarded in two categories:

Category A: for a promising and upcoming researcher, who has obtained their PhD within the period of 2019-2024:

Dr Julia Hellstrand is a post-doctoral researcher at the Helsinki Centre for Demography and Population Health, University of Helsinki.

Dr Cosmo Strozza is an Assistant Professor at the Interdisciplinary Center on Population Dynamics, University of Southern Denmark, Odense.

Category B: for a more experienced researcher, who has obtained their PhD within the period of 2009-2014:

Dr Éva Beaujouan is an Associate Professor at the Department of Demography, University of Vienna.
