Family structures are diverse and they are linked to social inequality. With this topic, our monthly Tuesday Dialogues have started again after the summer break. Dr. Bettina Hünteler of the Max-Planck-Institute for Demographic Research presented us with a specific perspective the family as a social unit and resource.
When and and how in a person's life does the composition of their family change? When in the life do births occur, when do parents die? Dr. Hünteler finds a variety of familial life courses in her research, which she groups into types. Some of these, she argues, have statistically more access to social capital.
The Tuesday Dialogues are a series of public, online talks on demographic research and pressing societal issues which have taken place since 2020. Since 2024 they are being organized in collaboration with the Einstein Center Population Diversity in Berlin. The Wissenschaft in Berlin Förderfonds supports this important initiative in a forward-looking field of research.
Next Tuesday Dialogue: "Falling birth rates: 5 policy options that help families", on 5 November 2024, 1 PM CET, by Prof. Dr. Martin Bujard, Research Director, Head of the Area “Family and Fertility” and Deputy Director of the Federal Institute for Population Research, Wiesbaden / Professor for Medical Sociology and Family Sociology at the Ruprecht-Karls-University Heidelberg.
