The American Association for the Advancement of Science Annual Meeting takes place in Washington D.C. this February with exhibitors from across the world showcasing their research related to the theme of ‘Science Transcending Boundaries’.
Population Europe’s partner, Centre for Population Change (CPC), has been chosen to represent UK Social Science at this prestigious event. The Centre will present the interactive exhibition ‘How to get to 100 – and enjoy it’, which discusses the challenges and opportunities of an ageing society.
By presenting social science research in this way, it is possible to break down some of the access boundaries allowing, for the first time, ESRC funded work to be showcased at the coveted American Association for the Advancement of Science Annual Meeting that boasts over ten thousand visitors during four days. The exhibit, chosen to represent ESRC investment, will sit alongside research from EPSRC and NERC as an example of great research from the United Kingdom. Research featured in the exhibition brings together knowledge from across disciplinary boundaries including demographers, economists, gerontologists, statisticians, geographers, sociologists who have worked together to find solutions to societal challenges on population change.
CPC’s Research Manager, Teresa McGowan said ‘I am delighted that CPC’s outreach work has been singled out to represent great UK research. We are proud to be the first social scientists to represent the UK at this event. The research included in the exhibit is a result of a decade of collaboration with partners across Europe who are working together to find solutions to societal challenges on population change. We hope that visitors leave the exhibition with a better understanding of the issues around population change, and curiosity to find out more in the future’.
