De Valk's work focusses on the topics of migration and integration – award ceremonies took place during the Berlin Demography Forum (BDF)
Berlin and Brussels, 25 February 2016 – Professor Helga de Valk is the winner of the 2016 Allianz European Demographer Award 2016. The award acknowledges de Valk, Research Leader at the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute, Professor at the University of Groningen and the Free University of Brussels and Editor of the European Journal of Population, as one of the most promising young researchers and her work on migration, integration and intercultural issues.
De Valk was chosen from a group of young European researchers who were nominated for their excellent research on population trends in the 21st century and their contribution to the public debate on demographic issues, such as new family forms, changing life course patterns and work lifes, sustainable socal security systems, and the integration of migrants. During a selection process that lasted several months, an international committee comprised of leading researchers in the field decided to bestow the award upon Professor de Valk.
On 24 February 2016, Committee member Dr Andreas Edel, Executive Secretary of Population Europe, and Professor Volker Deville, Allianz Germany, presented Professor de Valk with the award during a ceremony at the Berlin Demography Forum (photo, www.berlinerdemografieforum.org).
