Mind the Parental Age Gap! Why it matters for social change that fathers tend to be older

Tuesday, 6 October 2026, 1-2 PM CEST

(with German-English simultaneous translation)

Sebastian Klüsener, Research Director of the ‘Ageing, Mortality and Population Dynamics’ division at the Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB), Wiesbaden | Adjunct Professor at the Department for Sociology and Social Psychology of the University of Cologne | Visiting Professor at the Vytautas Magnus University, Kaunas, Lithuania

Despite improvements in gender equality, average age gaps between fathers and mothers have proven remarkably persistent in most high-income countries. Fathers tend to be on average about three years older than mothers. However, these average values mask substantial shifts in parental age differences by maternal age at birth. In this Tuesday Dialogue, Sebastian Klüsener will discuss why the parental age gap matters both for prospects of achieving higher gender equality and polarisation trends in society.
