Population Europe sadly announces the passing of Professor Dr Jan M. Hoem (1939-2017), Director emeritus of the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock, Professor of Demography at Stockholm University, and Honorary Professor of Statistical Demography at the University of Rostock. Being one of the most outstanding demographers in Europe, Jan M. Hoem has been particularly instrumental for establishing European demography – through his wholehearted engagement for the next generation of demographers, the improvement of Europe’s data infrastructure and the Generations and Gender Survey, and by fostering research collaboration throughout the European demographic research community. The partners of Population Europe and European Demographers will miss Jan M. Hoem as a colleague, advisor and friend, and owe him a lot.
