PAA 2021 Annual Meeting
From the PAA Website:
We hope that you all are able to find some summer relaxation, even amidst the many challenges and concerns in the world right now, including the uncertainty of what the fall semester will look like for those of you at academic institutions.
We wanted to update you on our ongoing plans for the PAA 2021 Annual Meeting, scheduled for May 5-8 in St. Louis, Missouri. As we noted in a prior message, we are planning a full scientific conference, even as we don’t know exactly what form it will take. At this point, we are assuming it will be a hybrid meeting, with some activities occurring in-person and some online; we are looking at different schedules and formats for research-sharing opportunities. We are also continuing to gather information and to learn from other organizations about how best to coordinate a major academic conference during a pandemic. Also looking ahead to 2021, we plan to continue the periodic PAA webinars focused on contemporary topics started this year by Eileen Crimmins and Sara Curran (which have been excellent!).
We are currently in the midst of developing the PAA 2021 Call For Papers, which will be issued in late July, with submissions due in late September. After realizing that PAA’s broad topic areas hadn’t been updated for at least two decades, we made some changes – we dis-aggregated several large topic areas, such as separating ’Health and Mortality’ into ’Health and Health Behavior’ and ’Mortality and Morbidity’ and also created separate topics on ’Race and Ethnicity’ and ’Gender and Sexuality.’ Also, we added some entirely new topic areas, including ’COVID-19,’ ’Historical Demography,’ ’Religion and Culture,’ and ’Spatial and Environmental Demography.’ We hope that the updated topic list better reflects the current breadth of population research.
We recruited a terrific group of 73 population researchers and practitioners to serve on the Program Committee – diverse in their backgrounds, career stages, disciplines and institutions – and this group has developed an innovative and thoughtful list of sessions under the broad topic areas. They are currently in the midst of inviting PAA members to serve as session organizers, and we hope that you will volunteer if you are asked to serve! We will also be developing a list of individuals interested in serving as chairs and discussants that will be distributed to organizers, and we invite you to add your name to that list. It will be open until submissions close in late September.
So we hope you will start thinking about your new PAA submissions! Please keep an eye out for the Call For Papers by the end of July. You are welcome to re-submit your papers from PAA 2020 that you were not able to present and/or that might have evolved over the last year. As part of submitting in September, we will be asking a few questions about your potential travel plans for next May and/or your interest in presenting virtually.
Please know that we welcome your suggestions and feedback as we work together to develop the best possible program for the 2021 annual meeting!
