Call for Papers: PopFest 2020

PopFest is an annual Population Studies conference for graduate, postgraduate and PhD students. It is organised by PhD students in order to bring together researchers from different Social Science disciplines such as Demography, Sociology, Social Statistics, Public Health, Social Policy, International Development, Human Geography, Urban and Landscape Planning, Social Anthropology, Gender studies and other related fields, with a focus on Population Studies.

PopFest is an excellent opportunity for postgraduate students to present and discuss their work in front of their peers and to get feedback and ideas from fellow researchers in a supportive international environment.

The conference programme includes renowned keynote speakers in the field of population studies and workshops specifically addressed to postgraduate students. In addition, social events and an aperitif-dinner are going to be organized.

Venue

PopFest is traditionally organised in conjunction with the British Society for Population Studies (BSPS) and this year, for the third time in its 27-year-long history, it will leave the UK.

Its 28th edition is organised by Florence Population Studies (FloPS), a collaboration between the European University Institute (EUI) and the University of Florence, and will take place at the EUI, Department of Political and Social Sciences, in Badia Fiesolana, Via dei Roccettini 9, San Domenico di Fiesole (FI), Italy.

Submission

The submission portal is now open. Abstracts for both oral presentations and posters are welcomed. Submissions can include, but are not limited to, the following topics: families, fertility, sexual and reproductive health, internal and international migration, mobility, ageing, life course, inequality, health, historical demography, mortality and methodological approaches.

The abstract should include:

  1. Background & Motivation
  2. Questions & Objectives
  3. Data & Method
  4. Results
  5. Conclusions & Final remarks

Please submit your abstract (maximum 300 words) via the online form. We also welcome extended abstracts (PDFs only, 2-4 pages) which should discuss questions, methods and results in more detail. Extended abstract shall be submitted via email at popfest2020 [at] gmail.com, specifying your name and institution in the file name.

The deadline for submissions is 1st March 2020. Applicants will be notified of acceptance by the end of March.

PopFest offers to participants the opportunity to chair sessions. Please indicate if you are interested in chairing a session when you fill in the submission form.

There will also be a limited number of student scholarships available. If the applicant is interested in applying for a scholarship, he/she must send an e-mail at popfest2020 [at] gmail.com outlining their motivation (max 150 words), and provide a written statement of their university supporting the request.
